LSF Donor Spotlight – John Frerking
John Frerking grew up watching faith become meaningful action. His father was a long-serving bishop and missionary who planted Lutheran churches across the Southeast, and his family’s identity was inseparable from the work of ministry and service. Decades later, John carries that legacy forward through personal generosity and a passionate vision for how Lutheran congregations across Florida can do more together than any one church could do alone.
“There are ministries a single congregation simply cannot run on its own,” John explained. “But when local churches partner with an organization like LSF, they can leverage something larger and reach people they would never reach otherwise.”
John’s vision is both practical and deeply rooted in history. He points to the early Christians who stayed in cities during deadly plagues — caring for the sick, burying the dead and forming networks of compassion that grew the church across the Roman Empire.
“Visible service was how Christianity spread,” he said. “It was never just words. It was people showing up.”
That same impulse drives his support for LSF’s programs today. From rescue homes that provide safety and stability for youth in crisis, to refugee resettlement efforts that welcomed families to new lives in Palm Beach County and beyond. For John, these programs and services are the natural expression of what he believes the church is called to do.
“When a congregation turns outward and people see Christians visiting the sick, caring for refugees and standing beside children who have no one – that is when the church becomes what it is meant to be,” John said.
John is equally passionate about something less visible but just as important: helping donors and congregations understand how LSF actually operates. Many of LSF’s government-funded programs work on a reimbursement model, meaning services must be delivered and funds spent before reimbursements arrive. This model means that local donations make the work possible by providing the upfront cash that allows programs to truly support the children and families in their care.
“People need to understand why their giving matters right now,” John said. “It is the engine that keeps the doors open while the reimbursements catch up.”
Beyond his financial support, John has become a thoughtful advocate for deeper congregational engagement with LSF. He believes every Lutheran church in Florida should have a dedicated committee or task force. He envisions a model where a local team that understands the mission, communicates it to their congregation and helps mobilize volunteers and resources. One church. One committee. One community transformed.
Whether through a financial gift, organizing a congregational LSF committee, volunteering with a local program or simply sharing LSF’s story with your church community- there is a role for everyone. You can support John’s vision and our work by getting involved in a variety of ways.
At LSF, we are grateful for the generosity and faithful advocacy of supporters like John Frerking.
