Meet Laila – A Story of Resilience and Growth
Laila Ogedengbe is a 15-year-old 9th grader at Miramar High School with big dreams and an even bigger heart. She loves reading and science, she’s drawn to science because of her natural curiosity about how things work. After high school, Laila hopes to attend college and pursue a career as a pediatric physician, inspired by a desire to help children and families in need.
Laila joined the Lippman Youth Shelter in April of 2026. When she first arrived, she wasn’t sure what to expect and she worried Lippman might not feel like home. What she found instead was warmth, comfort and a welcoming environment that felt far more like a household than a shelter.

In her free time, Laila enjoys writing, volleyball and running. She shares that what she appreciates most about the shelter is the caring staff and the homemade meals prepared for the youth. She has also embraced the structure, routine and guidance the shelter provides — recognizing how meaningful those things are in everyday life.
Laila gave a special shoutout to staff member Ms. Morganne, describing her as sweet, kind and a joy to talk to.

Since arriving, Laila has grown tremendously. She describes herself as more mentally stable, open-minded and confident in meeting new people. Her time at Lippman has helped her come out of her shell in ways she didn’t expect.
Laila’s story is a reminder of what is possible when young people are surrounded by support, stability, and people who believe in them.
