Safe Haven Stories at Lippman Youth Shelter – Resident Spotlight: Karl Love

At just 15 years old, Karl Love is already showing determination, growth, and a clear vision for his future. A 10th-grade student at Coral Glades High School, Karl has a strong interest in mathematics, especially Geometry, and takes pride in his academic progress.

Looking ahead, Karl plans to enlist in the United States Army after graduating high school. As an active participant in JROTC, he is already building the discipline and leadership skills needed to pursue that goal. Karl shares that his desire to join the military comes from a deep sense of patriotism and a commitment to protecting others.

Karl became part of the Lippman Youth Shelter community on March 27, 2026. When he first arrived, he admits he didn’t have high expectations and misunderstood what the shelter represented. However, his experience has transformed his perspective in meaningful ways.

Since being at Lippman, Karl has developed healthier ways to manage his anger and stress. With the support of staff and access to tutoring, his academic performance has improved tremendously. He credits the shelter’s structure, stability, and consistent routine as key factors in his progress.

Karl also values the supportive environment created by the team around him. He describes staff as respectful, helpful, and genuinely invested in his well-being. He appreciates the counseling services he receives and shares that they have made a positive impact on his life.

Outside of school and personal development, Karl enjoys attending church, studying the Bible, and participating in the shelter’s Bible group. He also highlights the sense of comfort he finds in everyday moments—whether it’s enjoying homemade meals or sharing laughter with staff.

Karl speaks highly of the individuals who have supported him during his journey:

  • Ms. Latoya Davis Ellison is someone he feels he can talk to openly and trust completely.
  • Ms. Morganne Whittaker provides guidance and helps him stay on track with schoolwork.
  • Mrs. Kimberly Gibson brings humor and positivity, always making him laugh.
  • Ms. Michelle Etienne consistently checks in and looks out for his well-being.
  • Mr. Anthony King is someone Karl respects and appreciates.

Karl openly shares that he has experienced trauma and instability in his life, but through his time at Lippman, he has found something different—a sense of home.

When asked what he would tell other youth entering the program, Karl offers this advice:
“Give it a chance—you might realize it’s not what you thought at all.”

Karl’s story is one of resilience, growth, and hope. His journey reminds us that with the right support, structure, and encouragement, young people can overcome challenges and build a strong path forward.
