someone's life. A 13-year-old boy from St. Paul Lutheran Church in
Weston, Florida learned that recently in a meaningful way.

Issues Hurricane Season Forecast: 'Near Normal'
9-14 Named Storms, 1-3 Major
Hurricanes
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Association (NOAA) issued the forecast for the 2009 Hurricane Season on
May 21, stating their expectations "for a 50 percent probability of a
near-normal season." That probability includes "a 70 percent
chance of having nine to 14 named storms, of which four to seven could
become hurricanes, including one to three major hurricanes (Category 3,
4 or 5)."

Sets Example in Foster Care
Preventive Services Keep Kids at
Home
On May 27, National Public Radio reported
that "Florida has become a leader in keeping children out of foster
care" by investing in preventive services. The child welfare work
of Lutheran Services Florida in Lee and Charlotte counties bears this
out, according to Tom Desio, Director for LSF's Child Welfare Case
Management program.

"Florida Matters," a weekly program of WUSF-TV and FM, included a story
of the welcome of a new family immigrating from Burma by Lutheran
Services Florida staffers Lourdes Mesias and Aung Thein, who himself was
a former Burmese immigrant. "Immigration energizes Florida,"
concludes WUSF reporter Larry Elliston at the end of the video.

Samuel Sipes, President and CEO for Lutheran Services Florida (LSF), has
been elected to serve on the Board of Directors for Lutheran Services in
America (LSA), a Baltimore-based alliance of nearly 300 social ministry
organizations of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod and the Evangelical
Lutheran Church in America.
