Southeast Region Benefits from Variety of Donations

1 February 2011

LAUDERDALE LAKES – Lutheran Services Florida’s Southeast Region has received a variety of donations to help clients in need.

The family of Danielle Suzanne Knier recently made a donation in her memory to the clients of the Lippman Youth Shelter. Danielle passed away unexpectedly last June at the age of 32 near Fort Lauderdale. She had been an active volunteer and advocate for women and teens. Danielle’s brother and sister-in-law, Steve and Ellen Knier of Wisconsin, gave $400 worth of sweatshirts in various sizes to the Lippman Shelter.

At Christmas, St. Thomas Lutheran Church hosted a Christmas Party for New Beginnings and Second Chance program families; Payless Shoes donated vouchers for clients in Miami and Fort Lauderdale; and South Miami Lutheran Church donated Christmas gifts for children in the New Beginnings and Second Chance programs.

At Thanksgiving, Christ the King Lutheran Church held its annual TurkeyThon to benefit Lutheran Services Florida. During the month of November, members of the congregation “purchase” paper turkeys from a bulletin board in the church. Each turkey has a price the member must pay for that turkey. This year’s TurkeyThon raised $2,000 for LSF.

Also at Thanksgiving, Grace Lutheran Church and South Miami Lutheran Church donated turkeys for the families in New Beginnings, Second Chance and Refugee Employment programs; Northwestern Alumni Class of 1961 donated Thanksgiving Dinners (with all the fixings and dessert) to New Beginnings families; and Sheila Steiglitz donated Thanksgiving Baskets to Supportive Housing clients.

LSF also nominated the family of a deceased employee, Corey Black, to receive donations from the Miami Herald Charities. Corey’s mother and children received $300 in gift cards from the Miami Herald Wish Book Program to purchase items for the family’s Christmas. Corey, who passed away unexpectedly, was a Youth Care Specialist III at Lippman Youth Shelter.

Lutheran Services Florida is a statewide, nonprofit human services agency dedicated to helping all people in need regardless of religious affiliation, age or national origin. Headquartered in Tampa, the agency has more than 60 programs located throughout Florida. Since it was established in 1982, LSF has helped more than 850,000 children and families. LSF’s mission is to bring God’s healing, hope and help to people in need.
