LCMS World
Relief and Human Care Awards $5,000 to Camps
27 August 2010
TAMPA – LCMS World Relief and Human Care
recently awarded a $5,000 emergency grant to Lutheran Services Florida to
support Camp Beyond the Horizon.
In partnership with the Florida Department of Children and Families and
other local sponsors, LSF provided a free therapeutic camp experience for
more than 150 children from kindergarten through sixth grade in areas of
Florida affected by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. The weeklong camps,
held during July and August in the Pensacola area, were developed to help
children deal with their emotions concerning the disaster.
“We are grateful for the support of LCMS World Relief and Human Care for
Camp Beyond the Horizon,” said Samuel M. Sipes, President and CEO of LSF.
“LSF has worked with thousands of children in therapeutic camps after a
disaster. Children need an opportunity to express their feelings, and these
camps provide that opportunity.”
“Funds for disaster response represent the love and concern of Lutheran
brothers and sisters across the U.S.,” said Barbara K. Hoffman, Manager of
Grant Administration for LCMS WRHC. “It is a privilege to be in partnership
with Lutheran Services Florida as we work to aid the children affected by
the stress of the oil spill situation.”
LCMS World Relief and Human Care is the mercy arm of the Lutheran
Church-Missouri Synod. LCMS WRHC supports human care and disaster relief
work worldwide. Over the past five years, LCMS WRHC has awarded more than
$35 million through more than 900 domestic and international grants to help
those who are homeless, persecuted, sick and hungry, in conjunction with the
proclamation of the Gospel.
