Donates $10,000 to Camp Beyond the Horizon
20 August 2010
TAMPA – The Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Foundation recently awarded
a $10,000 grant to Lutheran Services Florida to support Camp Beyond the
Horizon.
Camp Beyond the Horizon was developed to help children deal with their
emotions concerning the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. LSF, in partnership
with the Florida Department of Children and Families and other local
sponsors, provided a free therapeutic camp experience for more than 150
children from kindergarten through sixth grade in areas of Florida affected
by the disaster. The weeklong camps were held during July and August in the
Pensacola area.
“We appreciate the support of the Thrivent Financial for Lutherans
Foundation for Camp Beyond the Horizon,” said Samuel M. Sipes, President and
CEO of LSF. “Over the years, we have worked with thousands of children in
therapeutic camps after a disaster. We know their fears must be addressed or
they will manifest themselves in a variety of physical and emotional
symptoms. Children need an opportunity to express their feelings, and these
camps provide that opportunity.”
“We are delighted to assist Lutheran Services Florida through this grant,”
said Tim Schwan, Vice President of the Thrivent Financial for Lutherans
Foundation. “We trust that this support will strengthen LSF’s ministry to
those it serves.”
The grant is part of the Foundation’s Lutheran Grant Program, designed to
help Lutheran institutions and organizations take advantage of unique growth
and service opportunities and to support the interests and needs of the
Lutheran community. In 2009, the program distributed $2.3 million through 61
separate grants.
The Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Foundation is a private foundation
funded by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. Thrivent Financial is a Fortune
500 financial services membership organization helping approximately 2.6
million members achieve their financial goals and give back to their
communities.
