Final Posting on Bill,
No Longer a Hurricane
24 August 2009
At
5:03 a.m.,
the Weather Channel reported: "Hurricane Bill made its closest pass to
Bermuda early on Saturday and passed well southeast of Cape Cod and Nantucket
early Sunday. Sunday afternoon, Bill skirted the south coast of Nova Scotia,
eventually making landfall along the southern coast of Newfoundland early Monday
morning (Newfoundland time) along the Burin Peninsula. Bill has since lost
tropical characteristics, but remains a powerful tropical storm strength low in
the North Atlantic.
As of 5 a.m. EDT Monday, Tropical Storm Bill was located about 190 miles
northeast of Cape Race, Newfoundland.
The
battering waves that have impacted parts of the U.S. East Coast continue to
subside, but dangerous rip currents are still possible all along the East Coast
into Monday. The greatest risk of rip currents on Monday from Bill's residual
swells will be along portions of the New England Coast as well as North
Carolina's Outer Banks.
Maximum winds are at 70 mph. Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 315
miles from the center (mainly to the east).
For southeast New England, Bill's rain and wind impacts were fairly minimal. A
band of rain from Bill brought some locations 2 to 4". The highest wind gusts
reported were 33 mph in Nantucket, 22 mph in Chatham, and 25 mph in
Provincetown.
Strong gusty winds and heavy rain are impacting parts of Nova Scotia and
Newfoundland. Rain totals of 3 to 5 inches are possible. Winds gusted to 77 mph
on Sable Island and to 82 mph at Cape Race. Winds will continue to subside
across Newfoundland as Bill moves away.
ATLANTIC
A tropical wave is interacting with an upper level low about 450 miles east of
the Lesser Antilles, and is producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms.
Some slow development of this system is possible over the next couple of days,
and will continue to be monitored."
